Updates

Some updates again, I've graduated! (: Last of my exams, ever!

I used to think I wanted to do a Masters, but I think I'd like to work first. Still thinking of attending baking school too (:

The mittens are a failed attempt, they fit too loosely on my arm, although I think cotton yarn would shrink after washing. Not going to try that though. Went to Jurong Point's knitting shop but they don't sell double-pointed needles. This means I've got to head down to Chinatown again (: YAY YARN! And try that yarn shop in Orchard! :D

Getting my new pair of spectacles soon (: Time to replace the angelfish coloured ones. I look forward to wearing nice spectacles, I don't think I'd be able to wear contacts while working in aircon for so long. Mom's getting almost the same design as me... haha.

Oh and this was me yesterday night.

Knitted and finished the first season of How I Met Your Mother (:

Mount Bromo at Twilight

Mount Bromo can be seen in this shot, it isn't blocked by Batok (: See the trail of steam from the crater? Sometimes when you're a lucky photographer, the entire valley is filled with mist and its a GORGEOUS view. I'm not that lucky after all (: BUT lucky enough to reach just before the sun came up, or I'd have killed my uncle HAHA.

Unfortunately, this photo is made up of two composited photos, as the sky was way too bright and I couldn't hold it back well enough with my 3-stop ND grad. Plus, I left my other ND grad at home, silly me. Oh well, time to get another Singh-Ray filter I guess (: Ha! And I met a caucasian at Mount Penanjakan who borrowed my filter and told me he was Galen Rowell's student. What a joker (: And his friend who was munching on a carrot said he's a rabbit. Ah well (:

More shots to come!

Horseriding at Mount Bromo

That's me trotting on a horse and trying to get a sharp and composed photo (: My horse was really small, and kept neighing and tossing its head (prolly angry with its bridle) and my lens kept bouncing on the saddle and I got kinda worried that my expensive B&W KSM CPL would eventually crack into millions of tiny pieces!

But it was impossibly fun, and beautiful in the stunning landscape (soon to be uploaded). It was really necessary to ride the horse to and fro to Mount Bromo, for the distance to walk is extremely far, followed by a long and tiring (or short yet very steep, how contradictory) climb up to look down into the crater.

The horse ride cost about 50,000 rupiah per person after bargaining, for a group of six. Highly recommended (: It was MUCH more fun than the sunrise at Mount Penanjakan, or even the view down from Mount Bromo.

Mount Bromo

I'm back from Indonesia, and this here's my second favourite place from the trip - Mount Bromo.

Well, technically not really Mount Bromo (: I just realised that from this view on Mount Penanjakan, I can only see Mount Batok (in the middle), the smoke from Mount Bromo which is entirely blocked (haha) by Batok, and Mount Semeru distant at the top right of the photo.

But it was really gorgeous and quite cold at the top, where I missed the change of colours in the sky before sunrise, partly due to my uncle who really moves at an impossibly slow speed. Sometimes I feel like killing him! I wonder how my aunt tahan-ed him for 30 years (: My tripod also failed on me countless times while I was trying to take steady photos, and my knee gave way on me many times afterwards from all the kneeling on the ground.

I also need to mention here that I took a butt-numbing 11 hour car ride from Yogyakarta to Bromo, and the air-con was not working throughout the sweltering journey. After reaching around 10pm, I had to leave the hotel at 3.30am for the sunrise. Was it worth it? Most probably yes, I did enjoy the scenery. I did feel that it was the surroundings (ie driving from Probolingo to Penanjakan) with its gorgeous colours and sprawling landscape that was a whole lot more stunning than the view of Bromo though (: Yes, such beauty does exist in Indonesia indeed!

More photos to be up soon.

Duckie says Hello (:

Ducklings

I think I had a connection with this lil duckling in Sapa, Vietnam, who loved being photographed (: Don't you think he's tilting his head and smiling at me? And strangely, I wandered off to shoot ducklings on a rice terrace while everyone else was fascinated by and photographing adorable children of ethnic minorities. I might just prefer cute yellow fluff balls to children.

PS, I actually considered stopping eating duck after I saw this cuties. Still thinking if that would affect my already non-mammal diet.

Back from Vietnam

My photos from Cambodia haven't been completely uploaded, and now I have photos from Vietnam too! Good golly. Fortunately I took half as much photos in Vietnam (:

Here's Miak and I, sitting outside the gate before our flight.

We thought we were late as the status said last call so we ran all the way down, only to see that many people hadn't arrived (:

Shall put up more photos when I have the time.

Steve McCurry

Today I attended a talk by Steve McCurry, an award-winning photojournalist.

For those who have never heard of Steve, the Afghan Girl photo on National Geographic was taken by him.

Here he is, in what seems to be a favourite shirt:

SDC12565

Apologies for the ugly photo, its the best I could get from my seat... without blocking anyone's view.

He wasn't imposing, or impressive in the flesh, just a normal person. Perhaps that helps in the field of photojournalism? I'm not quite sure.

So anyway, what did I gain from the talk? Nothing really. Although his photos were stunning, he didn't seem keen on revealing much information. And luck seemed to have played a major part in him getting the shots. He also evaded many questions during the Q&A, but I'll attribute that to him being unwilling to share trade secrets.

But anyway, here's what part and parcel of being a photojournalist is like.

Photographing 'situations, where you discover real life as it unfolds'.

What's important - light, composition, and the human angle.

Sometimes when there's no news, you cover 'weather, features, slices of life'.

There are also 'times worth risking personal safety' - Steve gave an example of taking a shot of Indian porters passing breakfast outside of the train - and he was hanging out of the train to take the photo, with an assistant holding on to his legs.

Its about 'capturing people unaware', whether it be sleeping or playing.

Also, Steve likes taking photos in the rain. 'Love when its raining, how people react'.

Then there was a photo of people of some religion (I forgot) who were mutilating their backs which were bloody and all - and they didn't mind him taking their photo instead of attacking him or something. So people can turn out to be friendly and normal, not what you expected.

Steve also said he doesn't take photos of unwilling subjects, as there will be negative energy which disrupts photos etc. But I assume not all of his photos were taken of wholly willing subjects alone.

He added that he 'found most people very happy to be photographed'.

Maybe that's because its a different society? Or due to his skin colour... fame... we don't really know. I mean, try photographing people in Singapore for awhile and you'll find that most locals here are suspicious instead of willing and happy.

Sunrise at Changi

Today, I did what I thought I'd never do in the right mind:
Wake up @ 0500.

Of course, I only did it because YS was meeting me picking me up, and as a result he had to wake up even earlier than me.

This is a reason why morning runners should all have running buddies.

Anyway, after a nice drive along the almost empty highway, we reached Changi Beach. Boy was it DARK. Dark dark dark dark at around 0630. So, while walking on the beach I stumbled upon a few things. Including a white cylindrical object I hope and pray was not an urn.

And fortunately YS called out before I stumbled onto this couple in the darkness, happily hugging it seems:

Rendezvous

Fortunately again, it was not R21.

Soon after, they left with my intrusion. And the sky began lighting up.

Lighting Up

If you're a horizontal person, you'll prefer this:

Just to give prior warning, this will be a long and photo-heavy post.

'Cos I finally have the time to go through my photos!

Onwards!

A photo with seagrass:

I love how both the skies and sea contrast, blue on one side and goldish pink on the other. Almost as if I used my fabulous Singh-Ray Gold-N-Blue Polariser, which was resting in my bag at said moment.

An awesome sky above the trees lining Changi Beach:

Then I looked around, and saw a man fishing.

Then I looked upwards again (you get the gist?)

clouds

But while I was stoning and complaining about the lack of a SUNrise since the skies seemed to be lighting up of their own accord...

This photographer from a huge group which appeared out of nowhere started making his way to front.

That wily man had spotted the sun!

Which was quite disappointing and partially covered by clouds if you ask me.

By the way, why did I wake up at 0500 for this?!

Then I calmed down and took a position nearby and started shooting. The ugly sun.

and the lovers sailed off into the sunrise.

This one reminds me of a photo I took in Canada. Which knowing me, haven't uploaded or processed for the matter:

And here's my favourite out of all the photos I've taken:

sunrise plane

See the plane and the sun? Nice!

We're only halfway through by the way, but don't stop reading.

Here's the typical sunrise shot. Boring... but I kinda like those clouds floating in a row:

Then light bathed Changi Beach in its beautiful glow.

Beautiful glow is subjective. The above photo contains the fishing man. Fisherman. Whatever.

That lil fella between the fishing rod and little fisherman is YS (:

Here he is again!

Did I mention what a nice guy he is? His camera battery died halfway but he waited patiently while I kept snapping away with indecision.

Let's end with another shot of the beautiful sky (:

Darkroom

HA HA HA HAAAAA :D

I printed my first photos in the darkroom today!

Nothing much to brag about, no dodging and burning yet (next week) and only did small ones (4R?) BUT ooooh what fun it was (:

I am really enjoying myself!

And the darkroom people are all nice and fun to work with.

Here's one of the photos I printed:

Seagull

Seagull Bokeh Test!

Wanted a shot to see the seagull's bokeh... My favourite shot out of the ten.

Somehow, I feel like I've reached a closed door in photography. Although I still love to take photos, I don't have an urge to create something beautiful, something that would stun even me. It hasn't come for quite a long time. I just keep thinking that my burst of enthusiasm left after the South Africa trip. There just aren't photos that make me go, wow, did I take that?

At a loss now.

Work Life Balance

xmas tree bokeh

X'mas Tree Bokeh, Nikon FE2, 50mm f/1.4, Ilford XP2

I have been unable to catch up w things, notably since I've been on my internship. The photo of an x'mas tree when its coming to CNY kinda represents what I feel.

So far, one month is almost over, and I really enjoy doing the writing. Its not really been what I would term 'slack,' with yesterday having to cover two events, the DBS and EZ-Link collaboration (which I found exciting, I even have a cool new ez-link card to show) and a financial briefing.

However, I haven't had the pleasure of writing a really big article, which I hope to accomplish before leaving in June.

Yesterday

Yesterday, I saw the most beautiful thing I'd seen in a long time.

My heart stilled, for a moment.

A Leica CL in a perfect unmarred black coat stared back at me, making me long to run my fingers down its smooth body.

AGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Its more beautiful than an M2 could be. I still think of it... (:

Anyway, got the slides yesterday. I'm glad to say that MY CL meters perfectly. I shall console myself with the knowledge that mine is working fantastic, even if it might not resemble a newborn baby.

Used Fuji Velvia 100F, the colours were stunning as usual. Sad to say, when I used Prince Hairy to digitise them (apologies in advance for lousy focus), he couldn't bring out the colours the way they really were!

Anyway, here's most of what was taken. Some photos were burnt out cos I opened the camera to look at the battery haha (:

First shot was the bitchy.

She doesn't like being in front of the camera - I guess many people conscious about their looks aren't.

I don't know what happened here (cos nothing is in focus haha!) but the blurred parts look nice to me (: We were waiting for Lily at Bugis MRT.

Tada, Miss Lily and our uncooked food. V thin DOF as the lighting was bad and ISO was low... But I still love velvia (:

Burnt photo here. That's my bag... and a really cute cupcake I gave my student for Children's Day. I'm not used to the fact that RFs can't focus close-up.

I'm beginning to see my photos in a new light. Hurried photo-taking which resulted in lousy compositions. Disappointment. Perhaps, not used to the framing was a contributing reason too.
